- New research by myvouchercodes.co.uk has revealed most valuable trainers
- Styles released only last year have increased by as much as 800 per cent
- Most valuable pair is Nike Dunk SB Low Staple NYC Pigeon, worth £6,650
- Trainer brands release limited runs of styles to increase hype and demand
We've all heard that selling on unwanted fashion items can make a bit of pocket money, but if you have old trainers hiding in the wardrobe you could be sitting on a small fortune.
New research by myvouchercodes.co.uk has revealed the trainers which have increased in value so much since they were first released that they will give you a better return on investment than gold.
The precious metal is likely to give an investor a return of a few percentage points, whereas some trainers have increased in value by as much as 6,500 per cent.
The most valuable style is the Nike Dunk SB Low Staple NYC Pigeon, currently worth £6,650 an increase of 4,275 per cent since their general release in 2005 when they cost £152.
Soaring values are down to the fact that many brands release limited runs of new trainer styles, which fuels demand.

The most valuable style is the Nike Dunk SB Low Staple NYC Pigeon, currently worth £6,650 - an increase of 4275 per cent since the trainers went on sale for £152 in 2005

The Nike SB Dunk Low Reese Forbes Denim, which were first released in 2002 and cost just £49, but can fetch £3,267 for a second hand pair
Celebrity collaborations such as Air Jordan and Eminem and Adidas and Pharrell also increases the desirability around a particular style.
As hype builds and the limited run sells out, demand is further fuelled meaning that people are prepared to pay over the odds on the second-hand market.
Twenty per cent of the trainers on the list were released only last year, and have seen an average increase in value of 813 per cent in just 12 months.
The findings are based on actual resale values rather than predictions, meaning a small windfall is a sure thing if you have a pair to sell.

A pair of Jordan 5 Retro Tokyo T23 could fetch as much as £2,800 - up 1,700 per cent on the original price. Air Yeezy 2 Red October trainers that cost £190 when they were released in 2014 are now worth a massive £4,298

These ASICS Gel-Lyte III Ronnie Fieg Navy Aqua went on sale for £80 in 2010, but could now earn you £646 if you have a pair to sell. Thanks to the hype of a celebrity collaboration, the Adidas NMD HU Pharrell Y.O.U. N.E.R.D trainers, originally costing £182, could fetch £3,345
And the good news is that to make a profit, your shoes do not need to be brand new in the box.
A worn second hand pair will still fetch thousands, provided they are clean an in generally good condition.
Anders Nilsson of MyVoucherCodes said: 'When we think of people building up a portfolio of items, we usually associate it with property or stocks and shares.
'While these may still prove a popular choice for investments, it’s interesting to see just how lucrative the footwear resale market has become, with some trainers raking in a potential profit of thousands of pounds.'
