Donations from Uyir will be used to improve traffic management

The city is expected to get 120 advanced number plate recognition cameras on major roads with the launch of Uyir.

These cameras will be fixed at 40 junctions on major roads in the city limits - Avinashi Road, Tiruchi Road, Sathyamangalam Road, Thadagam Road, and Mettupalayam Road.

Donations from Uyir will also be used to install surveillance cameras, barricades, and other traffic management equipment in areas that require improvement of facilities.

The number plate recognition cameras will help the police to identify violations such as jumping signal and over speeding and trace the offenders.

The cameras will have solar panels powered UPS.

Speaking on Uyir’s proposed role to modernise city roads, Vijay Mohan of Pricol, one of the trustees of the initiative, said that it has set apart a sum of about ₹4.5 crore for these.

“We had a sitting with the police to identify places where traffic management have to be improved. The details of road traffic accidents for 18 months were analysed and 59 grids were identified for immediate attention. These modern facilities will be installed at these locations to improve traffic management,” said Mr. Mohan.

K. Ramasamy of Roots Industries, another trustee, said that more number of traffic management equipment like barricades and cats eye to be fixed under Uyir will improve traffic movement and safety on roads.

Mr. Mohan added that Uyir will also develop a mobile app that can be used by citizen to directly report traffic snarls, accidents, damaged roads, other hindrances and threats on road to the police which is successfully being used in cities like Bengaluru.
