An student who pleaded guilty to stabbing a classmate because he thought he was stealing his pizza has walked free from court.

The 18-year-old stabbed his then 13-year-old schoolmate on a bus in September last year.

The teenage attacker, who cannot be named because of his age during the incident, pleaded guilty to unlawful wounding at Townsville District Court, Queensland.

The boys, who were both Kirwan State High School students at the time of the incident, were waiting for a bus, said Crown prosecutor Will Slack.

The 13-year-old had bought a pizza, which he shared a slice of with his older classmate.

Judge Greg Lynham said the frightened boy thought he was trying to steal his pizza.

The teenagers sat across each other on the bus when the older student took out a knife, which he swung above the younger student's head.

The young victim suffered minor injuries including a small wound to his wrist, which did not require any stitches.

Judge Lynham said the attacker gave the victim a tea towel to put over his wound.

The attacker told the boy he intended to stab the pizza box, not him.

'When the complainant saw your arm move he baulked and as a consequence of that you made contact with the complainant's forearm,' said Judge Lynham.

The 18-year-old escaped jail time because Judge Lynham thought the incident was 'blatant stupidity' rather than a malicious attack.

'I accept for purpose of sentencing that your offending might be more properly described as foolish ... in fact one of your referees describes you as an indiot,' he said.

The attacker was expelled from school and suffered the loss of friends after the incident occurred.
