MUMBAI: Temperatures spiked on Tuesday with maximum temperature touching 37.6 degrees Celsius, almost four degrees above normal. Weathermen blamed it on northerly winds.
It was the second highest temperature recorded in October in a decade. The earlier high has been 38.6 degrees Celsius. On Tuesday, maximum temperature recorded by the IMD Colaba observatory was 35 degrees Celsius, while the IMD Santa Cruz observatory recorded maximum of 37.6 degrees Celsius.
Weathermen said maximum temperatures were expected to remain in the same range. Ajay Kumar, scientist from IMD Mumbai, said, “The reason for the rise in temperatures is the warm and dry northerly winds. The dry air is known to contain pollutants which mix with the cold breeze from the sea that is also responsible for the smog.”
Meanwhile, there was a drop in minimum temperatures for the first time this month. The minimum temperature on Tuesday was 21.4 degrees Celsius.
