Singapore Airlines’ new fleet that connects Singapore with New York is the world’s longest non-stop commercial flight

Eighteen straight hours on a flight could sound a bit daunting, even to a hardened traveller. But when A350-900 ULR of Singapore Airlines took off from the Changi International Airport on October 11, it was excitement mingled with a sense of awe for the passengers.

The flight that landed at the Newark Liberty International Airport on October 12, clocking 17 hours and 52 minutes, was the world’s longest commercial flight. Saving four to six hours of travelling time, as opposed to a having a stopover at Frankfurt, the flight is the fastest one can travel 9,500 miles between the two cities.

The service that was dropped by the Airlines in 2013 was restarted with a modern fleet, with special focus on passenger’s comfort, says David Lim, General Manager India, Singapore Airlines. “After 10 years of ultra-long range operations, we know that customers prioritise sleep, time-saving, convenience and varied dining options.”

The aircraft, A350-900 ULR (Ultra-Long Range), has been configured in a two-class layout — with 67 seats in business class and 94 seats in premium economy class. It is designed with higher ceilings, larger windows and an extra-wide body to help reduce jet lag and ensure that passengers feel rested and relaxed upon arrival.

Little leg room and crammed seats are not a bother since there are no economy seats. The premium economy seats are as competent as the business class, giving passengers more space. The business class seat is almost 50% wider and has a recline of 132 degrees, which allows for additional seating positions and can be converted into a full flat bed with padded headboard.

For those who prefer to work in-flight, the business class seat can be converted into an office with its adjustable table, reading lights, in-seat laptop power supply, and USB and HDMI ports.

Ultra-long haul flights can be challenging for passengers. Being immobile for a long period of time poses health risks, but the airline has provided in-flight videos on stretch exercises and health tips specific to air travel. “Along with Canyon Ranch, one of the premier integrative wellness brands in the world, we have designed a wellness-focused menu too, in addition to the existing menu,” says Lim.

High-speed in-flight WiFi is available on board too. This service will be progressively introduced on other aircraft too, says Lim.

The flight, which began as a weekly-thrice service, has started daily operations. “We are seeing a renewed interest in our US non-stop flights from Indian travellers. They are excited by the prospect of non-stop travel, allowing them to reach their destinations in good time and with maximum comfort,” says Lim.

Singapore Airlines is the world’s first customer for the new A350-900 ULR. The aircraft will also be used for new non-stop flights between Singapore and Los Angeles, which are to be launched on November 2, 2018.
