Days after RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat urged the government to bring in a law for the construction of a Ram temple in Ayodhya, the BJP brass Wednesday said it was hopeful that the Supreme Court verdict on the issue would come soon. The ruling party’s stand suggested that it may wait for the apex court judgement on the issue.
Sources said BJP president Amit Shah made the indication during a coordination meeting of the RSS, its offshoots and the Uttar Pradesh government in Lucknow on Wednesday.
After the meeting, RSS Sah-Sarkaryavaha Krishna Gopal denied any discussion about Ram Temple, but sources said a functionary from an affiliated organisation had raised the issue, saying the temple should be built as soon as possible. Sources said Shah replied that the Ram temple was a commitment of the party, but the government was bound by the Constitution. Shah then told the gathering that the Supreme Court is going to start hearing the matter and party was hopeful that a decision will come soon, sources added.
Sources said a functionary also said a major section of the society was upset with the central government’s move of bringing an ordinance to restore provisions of the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act. Sources said Shah said the decision to bring the ordinance was taken as per the Sabka Saath-Sabka Vikas commitment.
Sources said BJP leaders at the meeting also said that if BJP gets positive results in 2019 polls, the party will continue in power for a longer time because it has the “vision” and a win in 2019 will strengthen the party’s credibility.
