77-year-old booked for murder had been jailed earlier

GURUGRAM: Harnek Singh Dhillon (77) — husband of Gurmel Kaur (74) who was found dead with her throat slit in her J-block house in DLF 2 on Saturday — had served 10 years in jail for killing a person over a property dispute years ago in Punjab, police sources said on Monday. The city police have written to their Punjab counterparts, seeking details of the case and other criminal records, if any.
Dhillon, who had also slashed his wrist and is currently in the ICU at a private hospital, has already been booked on charges of murder and suicide attempt in the present case, though the police are yet to find out what prompted the 77-year-old to first kill his wife and then attempt suicide.
On Monday, the autopsy — conducted on Gurmel in presence of her son who flew in from Australia on Sunday night — confirmed that she was murdered. “There was a single deep cut across her neck, leading to excess bleeding and death. Such kind of a cut can be inflicted by other person only,” said forensic expert Dr. Deepak Mathur, who conducted the post-mortem.
The couple’s son claimed his parents were not facing any monetary crunch, rejecting an initial theory that financial crisis might have led the couple to attempt a ‘suicide pact’. “He said they his parents had only one property in Gurugram — the flat in which they were staying in DLF 2. They couple was not having any financial issue but, the son added, they did not have any surplus money to lend anyone either. The son, it seems, is not in talking terms with his father for several years and used to talk to his mother only,” said a cop. The son did not visit Dhillon in hospital and went directly to Ludhiana after taking her mother’s body.
Police have so far failed to identify the man who was caught on a CCTV camera coming to the couple’s house on a scooter on Saturday morning. Also, the cops are yet to find out the whereabouts of Jaskaran Singh (51), who has been missing since October 14. Sources said the disappearance of Jaskaran, who had allegedly taken money from Dhillon years ago but hadn’t repaid it, had some connection with the mystery.
