Paytm says consumer data safe, only founder's personal info stolen for blackmail

BENGALURU: Payments company Paytm on Tuesday told Reuters that consumer data on its various digital platforms are safe, and only founder Vijay Shekhar Sharma's personal data has been stolen and used for blackmail.


The statement comes after, Noida police arrested three persons, including company’s spokeswoman Sonia Dhawan over allegations that they tried to blackmail Sharma for Rs 20 crore.

A long-time secretary to Paytm founder Vijay Shekhar Sharma was among 3 people arrested in Noida on Monday for allegedly trying to extort Rs 20 cr from him. The trio claimed to be in possession of data that included personal information on Sharma that the former secretary is suspected to have stolen as she had access to his laptop and phone.


Paytm in its statement said that "all its consumer data remains protected with highest and most impenetrable levels of security. This is a case of personal data theft of Vijay Shekhar Sharma, where three arrests were made yesterday."


The company said there would be no further comment in this issue, while the police are investigating.
