School curriculum in the State is set for an overhaul. A meeting of the curriculum steering committee presided over by Minister for Education C. Ravindranath here on Tuesday decided to go in for a comprehensive makeover of the school curriculum. Such a change was last taken up during the tenure of the previous United Democratic Front government.
The State Council of Educational Research and Training (SCERT) has been entrusted with the revision proceedings. The meeting also decided to make changes to 40 textbooks of Classes 9 and 10. This follows the recommendations of a committee set up to look into the changes and those of the curriculum subcommittee. Accordingly, some additions will be made and some omitted. The recommendation to make changes to 27 textbooks of Classes 1 and 5 was rejected. The changes will help to further explore the possibilities of information and communications technology and skill-related opportunities based on the National Skills Qualification Network. The revised textbooks will reach students in the forthcoming academic year.
The meeting also decided to attach quick response code to the textbooks and connect them to various digital resources. The names of the textbook writers from the revised textbooks will be done away with.
It mooted uniformity in Malayalam use in the textbooks. Poets Sugathakumari and Madhusoodanan Nair recommended that poetry will be given more emphasis as also grammar, and texts that helped inculcate values in children be introduced.
