Manchester United were largely second best as they were beaten 1-0 by Juventus at Old Trafford in the Champions League .

Here, Samuel Luckhurst gives his verdict on how Jose Mourinho's men performed .

David de Gea

Kept United in it with a few saves as United struggled to contain Cristiano Ronaldo , Juan Cuadrado and Paulo Dybala. 7

Ashley Young

Tried to cow Ronaldo with a couple of hefty challenges but did not succeed. Never got to grips with handling the Portuguese. 5

Chris Smalling

Was caught on his heels as Ronaldo centred for Cuadrado and was too meek in the challenge. 5

Victor Lindelof

One of his more impressive displays for United, despite Juventus’ firepower. Read the game well and timed his challenges impressively. 7

Luke Shaw

Juve had plenty of joy down his side as Cuadrado drifted and Ronaldo switched sides at times. Perhaps his most undistinguished outing of the season. 5

Nemanja Matic

Was disciplined and tried to get things going but the fleet-footed Blaise Matuidi and Miralem Pjanic outfoxed him. 5

Paul Pogba

Tried to make things happen but to no avail. Was a particularly imposing shield for Smalling and Lindelof as Juve hared at them. 6

Juan Mata

Could not get into the game as Juve dominated possession and when Mata did get the ball he lacked the incision to effect the attack. 4

Marcus Rashford

Cowed by the savvy Alex Sandro from the first minute. Looked very callow against the Brazilian and is still struggling on the right-hand side. 4

Anthony Martial

Embarked on the odd run against Joao Cancelo but his decision-making was not as sharp as it was at Stamford Bridge. 4

Romelu Lukaku

When United supporters screamed ‘move’ Lukaku rarely did. Bossed by Giorgio Chiellini and Leonardo Bonucci and too static. 2
