The mayor of Byron Bay has come up with a novel solution to deal with the problem of sexual deviants at the local nudist beach.

Mayor Simon Richardson has said the area designated for naturists should be moved closer to town to prevent anti-social behaviour.

The idea follows Byron Shire Council's decision to keep remote Tyagarah Beach as clothing-optional despite it having ten times the rate of sexual and street offences compared to any other beach in the shire.

The Mayor's reasoning for relocating the beach is that more people frequenting the location and its proximity to police resources would deter would-be offenders.

'All the negatives about this are because of the isolation,' Cr Richardson told a council meeting.

'I don't believe it is anti-family to have a naked body 30m up the road along the beach.'

'What we've got to be doing here is putting safety first. One sexual assault is too many. If any of our community feel unsafe on a particular beach because of sexual behaviour, we have a responsibility first and foremost to that person.'

Police data shows that 47 offences were recorded at Tyagarah and Belongil beaches in the past year while at all other local beaches there were only four offences recorded.
