The Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court on Monday sought a report from the Virudhunagar Collector on the identification of manual scavengers for the purpose of their rehabilitation.
A Division Bench of Justices M.M.Sundresh and N.Sathish Kumar sought the report after hearing a plea on the rehabilitation of manual scavengers in Madurai and Virudhunagar districts. A report on manual scavengers identified in Madurai was submitted before the court.
Advocate Sahaya Philomin Raj in his public interest litigation petition sought a survey be conducted to identify manual scavengers in Madurai and Virudhunagar and they be given identity cards so that they could avail themselves of rehabilitation benefits.
