CHENNAI: Irked by the apathy of Greater Chennai Corporation and private conservancy agency Ramky, residents of Kasturba Nagar 8th Main Road have written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
In the letter, which has been sent to chief minister Edappadi Palaniswami and governor Banwarilal Purohit, residents have highlighted how they have to make calls to conservancy officials or file complaintswiththecorporation or use the Swachhta app to get the streets swept.
“The streets remain dirty for prolonged periods. The conservancy workers coming to collect garbage are regular, but our roadis never swept and garbage lying along the road accumulates to become a mound. A resident has to call supervisors or file a complaint to get it cleared,” said Balaji, a resident.
“The whole Swachh Bharat is a sham when it comes to our street,” said a resident.
The letter highlights the plight of the residents and apathy of the civic body and the private agency.
“I see the main roads are being swept every day. Shouldn’t an interior road where so many residents live be cleaned frequently if not every day? Workers turn up to claim money during festivals or for removing garden waste and pruned branches, but not once have I seen any worker coming to clean this road,” said M Suresh, a resident of the 8th Main Road.
Corporation officials said they have not received complaints from residents. “I will look into the concerns if any,” said an official.
A supervisor from Ramky said one worker has been allocatedtosweep the road. “Twoof theseworkerscarry outconservancy work on the 8th Main Road,” the supervisor said adding that he will check if there are complaints from the residents.
