After a dismal turnout in the Jammu and Kashmir municipal polls, Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh has appealed to mainstream political parties to participate in the upcoming panchayat elections.
Saying that the security situation has improved, Singh said that there is no hesitation in talking to those who want to talk, but talks and terror cannot go together.
“I have spoken to all political parties regarding the panchayat elections. I have appealed to them to participate in panchayat elections… I am sure they will take part in it,” the minister said, addressing a press conference here.

“You all know that India’s identity is because of its vibrant democracy… Through democracy, we can resolve all the problems of Jammu and Kashmir… I appeal to all the people, who believe they are true representatives of the people, there should be no opposition to the panchayat polls from them.”
On his day-long visit to the Valley, the Home Minister met leaders of four major parties in the state — Congress, BJP, NC and PDP.

Responding to a question about dialogue with Pakistan, he said that “talks and terror” cannot go together. “There is no hesitation to talk to anyone… but Pakistan will sponsor terrorism in India, will promote terrorism and talks should also happen,” he said.
