PATNA: A team of Special Task Force (STF) of Bihar police arrested arms smuggler Deepak Singh from Simha village under the Matihani police station area in Begusarai district and recovered an AK-47 rifle from his possession on Tuesday. Deepak’s father Ramsevak Singh and two of his associates – Praveen Kumar alias Toni and Chunchun Kumar – were also arrested.
The recovery of AK-47 rifle assumes significance as the National Investigation Agency has taken over investigation into the alleged smuggling of AK-47 assault rifles from Army’s Central Ordnance Depot at Jabalpur in Madhya Pradesh to Munger in Bihar and other states.
“Three live cartridges of AK-47, two of single barrel rifle and a country-made semi-automatic pistol were also recovered from Deepak’s possession,” sources said, adding that during interrogation, Deepak and other arrested persons revealed that the AK-47 rifle was handed over to them by Ajay Singh, a criminal.
Quoting Deepak’s statement, STF sources said Ajay was killed a couple of months back.
“Deepak was in touch with Maoists for selling the weapon for around Rs 5 lakh. The STF received intelligence input about Deepak’s plan to sell the rifle. He was subsequently arrested,” sources said, adding the STF commandos contacted Deepak posing as Maoists and arrested him.
