VARANASI: The Indian carpet industry will capture 50% of the export market of the world in two years, said Prime Minister Narendra Modi, adding that the industry should try to take the export value from the existing Rs 9,000 crore to Rs 25,000 crore by 2022.
Modi was addressing the inauguration of the four-day India Carpet Expo in Varanasi on Sunday via a video link.
However, he said, "It worries us that the next generation of weavers and artisans is not interested in continuing their traditional art and occupation. We should encourage and patronize skilled weavers and their coming generations to keep the art alive to maintain dominance in the market."
