Shocking footage of a man violently stomping on the head of a male youth at a Melbourne train station is being investigated by police after it was uploaded to social media.
The short video, which was uploaded on Monday, shows a group of four young men walking up to the victim on the footpath outside what is believed to be Ringwood railway station.
A man in a white T-shirt then shoves the victim to the ground, before repeatedly kicking him and then jumping into the air and using both legs to stomp violently on his head.
The victim can be heard shouting during the attack.
Police said they were aware of a video circulating on the internet of an assault at Ringwood train station on the weekend.
"The incident is currently being investigated and more information will be provided when it comes to hand," a police spokesman said.
The state government has funded more Protective Service Officers across Melbourne's public transport network, and changed legislation to expand their powers in order to target crime and anti-social behaviour on trains.
PSOs patrol the train network, including Ringwood station, from 6pm every night until the last scheduled service.
The state opposition has committed to having PSOs patrol Ringwood station from 10am every day if it wins the election.
Anyone with information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
