The BJP on Monday asked Congress president Rahul Gandhi to stop mocking the Narendra Modi government’s Beti Bachao Beti Padhao campaign and sought answers from the opposition party over the registration of rape case against its senior leaders Oommen Chandy and K C Venugopal.
The Congress did not defend Chandy and Venugopal, both AICC general secretaries now, and said that law should “take its due course”.
Lok Sabha MP and BJP spokesperson Meenakshi Lekhi said Chandy and former Union minister K C Venugopal, also an accused in the case, were Rahul’s “friends” and the Congress should answer questions on such a serious charge against its leaders, instead of targeting BJP leaders.
Taking on Rahul for his criticism of the “Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao” scheme, Lekhi said it has led to an improvement in sex ratio in many states.
Asked about the FIR by Kerala Police at a press conference she was addressing with senior party leaders Sachin Pilot and Rajiv Satav, Lok Sabha MP and Mahila Congress chief Sushmita Dev said, “An FIR has been filed. The law must take its due course. We are not here to defend or protect anybody against whom there is an allegation. She has every right to file an FIR. Police has every right to investigate. It does not matter whether it is Oommen Chandy or anybody else.”
The Crime Branch of Kerala Police has registered cases against Chandy, former Kerala chief minister, and Venugopal, an MP, on a complaint of sexual misconduct filed by Solar scam-accused Saritha S Nair.
