PATIALA: One person died while over 22 have been left injured after a Punjab roadways bus rammed into a truck parked on a roadside at Chandigarh–Patiala road. The accident took place at 8.15am on Monday near Jangpura village of Banur division in Patiala district of Punjab. The bus was on its route from Chandigarh to Patiala when the driver lost his control and rammed into the truck.
One Navdeep Singh, 33, of Zirakpur - who was critically injured and rushed to the Max Hospital in Mohali after being referred by the doctors at the local hospital - succumbed to the injuries within a few hours of being hospitalized. The police claimed that Navdeep had boarded the bus from Zirakpur and was scheduled to reach Patiala. The police added that it seems he was sitting on the front seat along with three others.
Among the injured three have been referred and hospitalized in a private hospital in Rajpura while some others have been admitted to the government hospital at Rajpura and Banur for treatment.
The Banur police have registered a case under sections of negligence causing death, rash driving and other sections of the IPC against the accused driver Jagwinder Singh of Rupnagar.
“The driver of the bus is booked under various sections of the IPC as the passengers of the bus revealed he was over-speeding despite being asked him to drive slowly. The speedometer of the bus is hanged at 95 after the accident and it can be gauged that bus was at a very high speed. Some of the passengers claimed that the driver had exceeded 130 km/h speed on the speedometer in the bus. He had suffered mild injuries and we will take him into custody after first aid is properly given to him,” said the Station House (SHO) Officer Banur.
The SHO added around 18 injured persons had come on record as some of the passengers turned away from the accident spot and it is still unknown to which hospital they had gone to get the treatment. The SHO added that bus was among the newly launched buses of Rupnagar depot.
It is learned that an Innova car also hit the bus from rear after the over-speeding bus rammed into a truck. However, the occupants of the Innova car escaped injuries.
