Mysuru: A farmer from Sunkatonnur village under the Melukote police limits, who also used to run an autorickshaw, committed suicide on Sunday by hanging himself inside his auto. The deceased is Chandru, 35.

Chandru had borrowed Rs 6 lakh from local vendors for tomato cultivation. While half of his crop failed owing to various reasons including water scarcity, he was compelled to sell the remaining produce at throwaway price due to sudden drop in price. Finding himself in the midst of a financial crisis and unable to repay the loan, he hanged himself inside his auto near his house on Sunday evening, said Melukote police. His mother who saw him hanging alerted neighbours. Though he was rushed to a nearby hospital it was too late.

Chandru was living with his mother, wife and a two-year-old daughter. His wife is pregnant with a second child, said police.
