'Literally pulled a slug out of my burrito bowl': Horrified customer discovers slimy beast nestled in his Guzman Y Gomez meal

  • Slugs carrying ratlung worm can cause irreversible illness including paralysis

When an unsuspecting customer treated himself to a lunchtime Mexican feast over the weekend, a slimy slug was the last thing he expected to find lurking inside.

Adrian Day was greeted with the unsightly surprise on Saturday after picking up a chicken burrito bowl from Guzman Y Gomez Newtown, south-west of Sydney's CBD.

After sitting down to devour the meal, Mr Day spotted the dark slug nestled among the lettuce, rice, bean, tomato, Jalapeño and sour cream.

Slugs carrying ratlung worm can cause irreversible illness including paralysis, so fortunately Mr Day noticed the intruder before mindlessly chowing down.

After complaining to the store, a manager notified him they would be completing a full audit to make sure future customers were not in danger of being infected.

'Both the store manager and area manager have spoken to me and said they're conducting a full audit to work out what happened and make sure it doesn't reoccur.

'We all agree that it probably had something to do with the recent rain and sudden warmth,' he wrote in a post to a Facebook group.

Slugs can get ratworm by eating the faeces of rats carrying the parasite.

Daily Mail Australia has contacted Guzman and Gomez for comment.

Consuming an infected slug can cause an infection of the brain called eosinophilic meningo-encephalitis.

In 2010, Sam Ballard, 18, ate a garden slug as part of a dare and ended up spending 446 days in a coma, ultimately leaving him wheelchair bound.

Now, aged 28, he suffers seizures, can no longer control his body temperature and requires around the clock care.
