Outstayed your welcome? Tony Abbott gets a nasty surprise when he returns to his Mercedes in the upmarket Sydney suburb of Balmoral
- Former prime minister Tony Abbott received a $112 parking ticket in Sydney
- His Mercedes-Benz had been parked for too long at Balmoral on the North Shore
- It comes after the Liberal Party lost the Wentworth by-election across Sydney Harbour
Former prime minister Tony Abbott received a nasty surprise when he returned to his German luxury car in an upmarket suburb during a bad weekend for the Liberal Party.
A $112 parking ticket on the windscreen of his 1990s Mercedes-Benz C-class sedan soured his visit to Balmoral beach, on Sydney's lower North Shore.
The former Liberal leader had an open-mouthed expression on his face as he inspected the infringement notice on Sunday.

An image of him wearing shorts and a blue jumper, on The Esplanade overlooking Middle Harbour, has been posted to social media.
The photograph was taken near the corner of Esther Road the day after the Liberal Party was defeated, following a 19 per cent swing, in his bitter leadership rival Malcolm Turnbull's old seat of Wentworth, across Sydney Harbour from Balmoral.
Mosman Council, which issued the ticket on Sunday, falls within Mr Abbott's federal electorate of Warringah, which he has represented since 1994.
Luckily for Mr Abbott, the parking ticket won't make him ineligible to remain in federal Parliament under section 44 of the Constitution.

The former PM (pictured with wife Margie and their daughters Frances, Louise and Bridget) was slapped with a $112 parking fine
He may, however, have weightier political issues on his mind.
With high-profile independent Kerryn Phelps look set to triumph in Wentworth, Mr Abbott could face a challenge from another independent, Northern Beaches Mayor Michael Regan, at next year's federal election.
Mr Regan, who presides over parking infringement matters, has previously indicated he would like to run against Mr Abbott to highlight climate change.
Advertising executive Jane Caro has also indicated a possible tilt at Warringah.
Under New South Wales law, drivers who overstay their welcome in a ticketed parking area incur a $112 fine.
As a backbencher who is yet to receive special entitlements as a former prime minister, Mr Abbott is paid $207,000 a year.
Daily Mail Australia on Monday contacted Mr Abbott's office and Mosman Council.
