Visitors to the tree-covered Egmore Museum are dismayed by the dumping of construction debris behind the museum, which stands out like a sore thumb on the well-maintained premises.
The Egmore Museum that houses several galleries, including archaeology, anthropology and art, attracts a large number of visitors every day. The museum located on Pantheon Road is generally well maintained, but visitors are disheartened by the dumping of wood material from the Pre History section located on the back.
Maintenance slammed
A photo of old wooden material dumped on the lawns of the museum on the social media has not gone down well, with several people criticising the poor maintenance of the museum. However, being a Friday, the museum remained closed, with construction activities going on inside the premises.
Minister for Tamil Official Language and Tamil Culture Ma Foi K. Pandiarajan, under whose Ministry the Egmore Museum comes, when asked about the dumping of old office cabinets and wooden materials, said construction activity was going on on the premises for paving a footpath and renovation of gallery. The Minister said the debris had remained there for more than a week. He said directions were issued to take suitable steps to remove them.
A senior official of the Chennai Museum said renovation was going on in the anthropology gallery. He said: “The old office cabinets and wood materials have been proposed to be auctioned within a fortnight.”
