A desperate search is carrying on throughout the night for a missing nine-year-old boy after he went missing on Sunday evening.

Zion Flaws was last seen at around 8pm on Sunday evening on Greer Crescent, Tawa, Wellington on New Zealand's north island.

Police said the boy is wearing a grey Fila t-shirt, blue jean shorts and white converse shoes.

Zion's family and police have serious concerns for the boy's safety.

A spokesman for NZ Police told Daily Mail Australia at 2am on Monday morning the search was still ongoing and the boy had not yet been found.

Anyone who has seen Zion or has any information as to his whereabouts is urged to ring police on 111.
