The wife of Mexican drug lord El Chapo has been living the life of luxury as her husband sits in a New York prison awaiting trial.

Emma Coronel, a former Mexican beauty queen, regularly showcases her glamorous life in photos posted on her social media account.

In recent months, the 29-year-old has shared photos of herself beach-side in a bikini, soaking up the sun in Los Cabos and showing off her Prada purses.

In one photo on Instagram, Emma also posed alongside her twin daughters who were each brandishing designer handbags.

The mother-of-two made headlines just last month for the elaborate Barbie-themed birthday party she threw for their seven-year-old daughters, Emaly and Maria.

The party featured huge arches made of pink balloons and an abundance of Barbie paraphernalia.

A ballroom with a chandelier was redesigned to be a giant pink Barbie Dreamhouse, complete with pink cakes, candy and a large Barbie neon sign.

Some Mexicans reacted with fury after news of the lavish birthday party emerged as they accused the former beauty queen of using 'blood money' from her 61-year-old husband's drug empire.

The party featured an abundance of Barbie paraphernalia, including personalized water bottles

'The whole story with her is so surreal,' a retired DEA agent told the New York Post. 'She goes around and flaunts her wealth and lifestyle in front of everyone's face.'

The drug lord is currently locked up in a high security prison in New York following his extradition from Mexico in January last year.

He has been charged with 17 crimes, among them that of leading the extremely dangerous Sinaloa drug cartel and of transporting at least 200,000 kilos of cocaine to the US from Mexico.

Emma, who El Chapo married in 2007, has US nationality. Their daughters Maria and Emaly were born in the US but live in their father's home state of Sinaloa.

His wife and their two daughters have been spotted at El Chapo's various court appearances in New York in the past year.

Jury selection for his trial is set for November 5 even though his attorneys insist that they cannot be ready to represent him due to the huge number of documents in the case. The trial is expected to take four months.
