The incredible love story behind a terminally ill patient who was granted her final wish of seeing the ocean one last time by hero paramedics
- Hervey Bay paramedics were transporting the palliative care patient to hospital
- They knew her love of the beach, and took her for one last visit to a nice lookout
- The elderly woman, named Joyce, said she was thankful for the chance
The incredible love story behind the photograph of a terminally ill woman soaking up the sun's rays during her final trip to the beach has been revealed.
Joyce and her husband, who declined to share his last name, chose to retire in Hervey Bay, in north Queensland's, after becoming smitten with the serene beach during a romantic stroll.
While walking hand-in-hand, the retired couple decided to spend their final years in the coastal town.
After being placed on palliative care years later, Joyce divulged her story with two paramedics, Graeme Cooper and Danielle Kellam, as they drove her to her home so she could die surrounded by family.
But one week later, Mr Cooper and Ms Kellam were asked to pick up Joyce and bring her back to the hospital.

Joyce was able to hear and see the water, and Mr Cooper rounded out her experience by fetching saltwater and sand and bringing it back to her
After arriving at Joyce's home, Mr Cooper and Ms Kellam decided to make a stop at the ocean so Joyce could look out over the peaceful beach that carried so many fond memories, the Courier Mail reported.
'I went straight to Joyce and whispered in her ear "would you like to go back via the beach?" on the way back,' Mr Cooper said.
He soon found a picture-perfect spot and placed Joyce, who was strapped to a stretcher, on a knoll overlooking the ocean.
Joyce was able to hear and see the water, and Mr Cooper rounded out her experience by fetching saltwater and sand and bringing it back to her so she could dip her fingers in.

'Her eyes lit up, her heart rate increased,' Ms Kellam said.
Ms Kellam took a candid snap of the intimate moment, before Joyce decided it was time for her to go.
Two days later, she passed away in her hospital bed.
Mr Cooper and Ms Kellam have since been praised for their compassion and humanity.
They were officially invited by Kensington Palace to join the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, at a lunch during their tour of Australia.
The pair said it was a great honour to be recognised by the royal family, with Mr Cooper citing all the great work Harry has done with the Invictus Games.
But recognition isn't why the pair get up and go to work every morning.
'If I lost my compassion for the public, that would be the day to hang my shirt up because I'd know I wouldn't have what I need to do the job,' Mr Cooper said.
