Police officers paid tributes to martyrs marking the valedictory of Police Martyrs’ Week at Parade Ground here on Sunday. Collector M. Ram Mohan Rao, Commissioner of Police Kartikeya and Kamareddy Superintendent of Police N. Swetha Reddy placed wreathes at the obelisk and observed a two-minute silence in memory of the martyrs.
Earlier, the authorities lit the martyrs’ torch and the Commissioner of Police read out the names of those who laid down their lives while on duty in the last one year across India. The Collector received a guard of honour presented by the armed reserve police force.
Mr. Rao said about 35,000 police personnel have sacrificed their lives till date in India. “Only they are on 24x7 duty and therefore deserved to be respected by all,” he said and added that with the concept of friendly policing, the department has endeared itself to people.
Mr. Kartikeya said this year, 414 policemen – one SP, four DSPs, 10 CIs, 23 SIs, 36 ASIs, 75 head constables and 265 constables – died while discharging duties.
Additional DCPs M. Sreedhar Reddy (Law and Order), and Akula Ram Reddy (Administration) and other officers were present.
Smrithi parade
KARIMNAGAR Special Correspondent adds: District Collector Sarfaraz Ahmad lauded the services and sacrifices of police personnel in ensuring peace in society.
He participated in Police Commemoration Day celebrations and Smrithi parade at police headquarters in Karimnagar town on Sunday. Speaking after paying floral tributes to police martyrs at the memorial, the Collector said police were striving hard round the clock to maintain law and order.
Calling upon all sections to help police ensure peace, he said the society would progress only if there was law and order. He appreciated the Karimnagar district police for launching innovative policing measures to prevent crime.
Commissioner of Police V.B. Kamalasan Reddy said the peaceful environment in Telangana was because of the sacrifices made by police personnel by laying down their life.
The police paid tributes to martyrs through ‘Shoke Shastra’ during Smrithi parade that was conducted by RI Mallesham.
Additional DCP (Administration) S. Srinivas read out the names of police martyrs who were killed this year and paid tributes to them.
Also, prizes were give away to winners in various essay writing and painting competitions held in this connection.
