Stating that it was not possible to imagine a society without a police system, Joshi Venkatesh, Second Additional District and Sessions Judge said that while soldiers were protecting the borders of the nation, the police were protecting lives and properties of civilians.
Speaking on Police Commemoration Day at the police parade ground on Sunday, he said police personnel are serving under tremendous stress to maintain law and order in the country. While saying they should become more people friendly, he also urged the public to respect the police for their efforts. “On many occasions, the police on duty lose their lives for the people. The people must understand their contribution,” he said.
Highlighting the efforts of the police, Mr. Joshi suggested that the department hold the Martyrs’ Day event at the taluk level also.
Earlier, addressing the event, Superintendent of Police Prakash Nikam read out the names of 416 police of the country who laid down their lives on duty last year. He said the event was being commemorated in the memory of 12 police constables who died fighting the Chinese army on October 21, 1959 in Ladakh, Jammu and Kashmir.
During the event, the family members of two constables, Parasappa Gawari and Subhash Patil, were honoured as the constables died on duty.
The district police participated in customary parade, fire three rounds of bullets in the air and several dignitaries laid wreaths on the police memorial. Deputy Commissioner Sanjay Shettannavar was special guest.
