Thunderstorms hit south-east Queensland with strong winds and hail

Severe thunderstorms, showers and hail have hit south-east Queensland with reports from the weather bureau of golf ball-size hail and wind gusts of more than 100km/h.

Hail between two to three centimetres in size north-east of Boonah was reported to the Bureau of Meteorology about 3pm on Sunday while four-centimetre hail was reported at Aspley.

Bundama in the Ipswich area recorded 56 millimetres of rain within 30 minutes while 42 millimetres of rain fell within 15 minutes at Mount Tamborine.

The bureau said a 106km/h wind gust was reported at Toowoomba at1.20pm while a 96km/h wind gust was recorded at Gatton at 2.10pm and a 91km/h wind gust at Oakey at 1.10pm.

At 6.45pm, more than 7500 residents in south-east Queensland were without power, according to Energex.

At 5.30pm, the bureau said while the immediate threat of severe thunderstorms across south-east Queensland had passed but there was potential for further thunderstorm development.

At 6.15pm, an updated warning was issued for a supercell moving towards Gin Gin in the Bundaberg region with the threat of very large hail and destructive winds.

"Severe thunderstorms are likely to produce damaging winds, heavy rainfall that may lead to flash flooding and large hailstones over the next several hours in parts of the Central Highlands and Coalfields, Capricornia, Wide Bay and Burnett, Darling Downs and Granite Belt and Southeast Coast districts," the warning said.

"Locations which may be affected include Maryborough, Hervey Bay, Fraser Island, Biloela, Blackwater, Taroom, Monto, Rolleston, Baralaba, Calliope, Mount Morgan and Rainbow Beach."

"Severe thunderstorms are likely to produce destructive winds, heavy rainfall that may lead to flash flooding and very large hailstones over the next several hours in parts of the Wide Bay and Burnett district. Locations which may be affected include Bundaberg and Gin Gin.

Queensland Fire and Emergency Services advised residents to move their car under cover or away from trees, secure loose outdoor items, seek shelter and avoid driving or walking through flood waters.

Brisbane is expected to see showers and light winds throughout the week with a top of 31 on Wednesday.
