Rs 35.4 Lakh gold seized at Chennai airport

CHENNAI: Customs officials at the city airport detected two cases of gold smuggling on Thursday, leading to the recovery of more than 1kg of gold worth ₹35.4lakh.




Two Indian passengers, Parameshwari, 45 , and Fathima Beevi, 40, both from Madurai, who arrived from Kuala Lumpur by Batik Airlines Flight ID 6016T, were intercepted at the exit of the arrival hall on suspicion.


Following searches of their baggage, three emergency lights were found.


On dismantling the lights, two thin rectangular gold plates were found concealed in the battery compartment of each lamp. Six gold plates weighing more than 1kg in total, worth ₹35.4 lakh, were recovered from their checked-in baggage.
