Mumbai: 40-year-old man dies after being run over by unlicensed auto-rickshaw driver


On Friday, a 40-year-old man succumbed to injuries after he was run over by an auto-rickshaw at Mankhurd junction. The auto-rickshaw driver was arrested after the accident after which it was revealed that he was flouting various other rules and didn’t have a driving licence.

According to Mumbai Mirror, the deceased was identified as Shakeel Ahmed Sheikh (40) a resident of Vashi Naka, he was run over by an auto-rickshaw at Mankhurd junction on Tuesday evening. The auto-rickshaw driver has been identified as Umesh Sonawane. Shakeel Ahmed Sheikh after the accident was first rushed to BMC-run Govandi Shatabdi Hospital, which neither had a CT scanner nor ventilator support. And was later shifted to Sion Hospital for want of emergency care. He underwent tracheostomy and was put on a ventilator. But the ventilator machine failed at a critical moment, and later his family was asked to manually pump an Ambu bag for eight hours in order to keep him alive.

Akiluddin, Ahmed’s younger brother, told the leading daily, “My brother could have survived if Sion Hospital doctors had treated him on time. His wound was sutured almost six hours after his accident. And then the ventilator failed. All this led to my brother’s death.” The Govandi police have arrested Umesh Sonawane for driving without a licence, for rash and negligent driving. But after the victim’s death, the cops added IPC Section 304 (Punishment for culpable homicide not amounting to murder) against him.
