Here's Karthik Lakshmanan: "Negi giving some life to the crowd with his aggressive batting. Clearly doesn't respect Mulani's gentle left-arm spin."

Here's what Sidhanta Patnaik wrote on Negi after his heroics in the semi-final:

11:32(IST) Back Where it all Started, Negi's Semifinal Exploits vs Jharkhand has Given His Career a Timely Boost

It was at M Chinnaswamy Stadium that Pawan Negi had made a name for himself in 2015.

11:31(IST)

Pawan Negi has arrived at the crease! Starts his innings with a sweep towards deep square leg and follows it up with a powerful shot down the ground for a boundary. If that was not enough, Negi came charging down the track to smash Mulani for a six over deep mid-wicket. Delhi have decided to counter-attack and have collected 25 runs in the last two overs. They are 130 for 6 in 33 overs.

11:24(IST)

Himmat is playing a courageous knock! He is a sweet timer of the ball and the moment Mumbai bowlers have bowled short at him, the 21-year-old has pulled all of those short deliveries with authority. He has been joined by Pawan Negi who played a gem of an innings in the semi-final to help Delhi beat Jharkhand. Delhi are 115 for 6 at the end of 32 overs.

11:15(IST)

Another one bites the dust! It was a length delivery outside off and Lalit went chasing after it, got an edge and ended up offering a simple catch to the wicketkeeper. Delhi are now six down with just 100 runs on the board.

11:12(IST)

Himmat Singh rocks back and smokes this short delivery over deep mid-wicket for a six and brings up the 100 for Delhi. Quality shot, that! He needs to carry on but will need some support from the other end.

11:07(IST)

"Delhi paying the price for being too dependent on Gambhir. The captain has scored 500+ runs in the tournament but the rest haven't stood up. They'll now need a massive effort from the lower order," says our reporter Karthik Lakshmanan who is at the venue.

11:05(IST)

Lalit Yadav survives a close stumping call. Looked like a perfect replica of Shorey's dismissal but Lalit did well to keep his toes inside the crease.

10:56(IST)

Himmat Singh charges down the track and lofts the spinner towards the cow corner for a boundary. The two batsmen managed to take three singles in the next four deliveries before Mulani struck. The left-armer got one to turn away from Shorey who was prodding forward to push it towards the off side but missed the line of the ball and got beaten. Tare behind the stumps reacted quickly and removed the bails in no time. Shorey fails to build on his start and Delhi have lost half of their side.

10:50(IST)

Royston Dias has been brought back to the attack. The left-arm seamer starts his new spell with a maiden. Dias also bowled one well-directed bouncer to Shorey and rattled him up. The 26-year-old somehow managed to keep it down.

10:43(IST)

Shorey gets one half-volley and punches it down the ground for a boundary. It was Shorey who stood tall against Rajneesh Gurbani in the final of 2017-18 Ranji Trophy and helped Delhi put up a reasonable total, but couldn't save his team from a defeat. He is once again in the middle and is fighting a lone battle. Himmat Singh will have to provide him some support and take Delhi closer to that 200-run mark.

10:35(IST)

Got him! Shivam Dubey has bowled brilliantly and is the one to break the steady-looking stand. This was a short delivery and Rana was in no position to go for a pull shot. The left-hander got a top-edge that landed in the hands of the Lad at the deep mid-wicket. Mumbai are once again back on top as Rana has thrown his wicket away. Delhi are 60 for 4.

10:28(IST)

Delhi are 60 for 3 after the end of 19 overs. Dubey and Mulani have been economical and haven't allowed Shorey and Rana to score freely.

10:22(IST)

Spin being introduced into the attack for the first time. Shams Mulani has taken 16 wickets this season and starts his spell by giving away just two runs from his opening over. The left-arm spinner will have to maintain the pressure that was created by Kulkarni and Deshpande.

10:18(IST)

Dias hasn't really looked threatening. Starts the 16th over with a wide delivery outside off and Shorey timed it towards backward point for a boundary. Dias then follows it up with another bad delivery that had enough width to be tapped towards sweeper cover for two runs. Dias is also trying to bowl short and has given a couple of wides. He has now conceded 22 runs in his three overs.

10:12(IST)

Drinks! Shorey and Rana have now added 26 runs for the fourth wicket and are trying to make sure Delhi get to a respectable first innings total. Both Kulkarni and Deshpande are done with their opening spell and this will allow the two batsmen to play a bit freely. Delhi - 47 for 3 in 15 overs.

10:07(IST)

Shivam Dubey bowls a tidy over and allows Dias to change ends. The left-armer looked a bit more settled from this end and gave only four runs. Both the batsmen are now trying to make sure the scoreboard keeps ticking without taking any unnecessary risk. Delhi - 45 for 3.

09:56(IST)

Deshpande bowls one on the pads and Shorey whips it towards the deep mid-wicket region for four. The two are not starting to look for runs and this will give Delhi some confidence.

09:52(IST)

Mumbai have brought Royston Dias into the attack. The left-arm medium pacer started the over with a half-volley that was driven down the ground by Rana for a boundary. He then follows it up with a short delivery and gets smashed towards deep mid-wicket for another boundary. Nine runs coming off this over. Dias will have to keep the pressure on and make sure Mumbai stay at the top. Delhi are 34 for 3.

09:47(IST)

Another good over from Deshpande. He is bowling at good pace and is mixing his line and length. He is also hitting the deck hard, bowled a couple of very good bouncers as well. Delhi are 25 for 3 after 10 overs.

09:43(IST)

Both Shorey and Rana have failed to perform consistently. The two have had a couple of very good games but haven't been as consistent as their team would have liked them to be. The duo are currently trying to settle in and are not looking in a rush. It's very important that these two bat as long as possible and pull their team out of the wood before they look to accelerate.

09:36(IST)

While Deshpande has picked up two wickets, Kulkarni has done his job at the other end. The 29-year-old has hit the right areas and has only conceded 10 runs in his four overs.

09:31(IST)
09:31(IST)

And another one! Mumbai are all over Delhi at the moment. It was on a good length outside off and Manan Sharma went for the drive. The ball bounced a bit extra and got an edge that landed in the hands of the wicketkeeper. Delhi are 21 for 3 and need Shorey and Rana to put on a big stand.

09:24(IST)

And he follows it up with a poor shot! It was a nothing shot from Chand! It was not a great delivery, was full and outside off and Chand went for the cut but couldn't keep it down. Rahane at point is not going to miss such easy chances. Delhi have lost both of their openers and are in big trouble (17 for 2 in five overs).

09:22(IST)

That's some shot from Chand! Allows the ball to arrive and opened the face of the bat to guide that delivery for a boundary towards the backward point region.

09:20(IST)

How good has been Deshpande for Mumbai? The paceman now has 14 wickets in this season and has picked up 10 scalps in his last three encounters. It was a brilliant second over from him. He managed to induce an inside edge off Chand's bat that rolled towards the fine leg fence. Chand then played an uppish drive in the very next delivery that went to the left of the mid-off fielder and collected two runs.

"It's like India - Pakistan". That's how Vinayak Samant, Mumbai's coach, described their rivalry with Delhi on the eve of the Vijay Hazare Trophy final at M Chinnaswamy stadium in Bangalore. It set the tone for the big day on Saturday when two teams on top of their game will take each other on in the title-clash. Mumbai have been unbeaten throughout the tournament from their ten matches. Almost all their matches have been rather one-sided, including the two knockout games leading to the final. Delhi have lost just one of their ten matches so far, and come into the final having just about survived a scare against Jharkhand in the semifinal. Mumbai perhaps hold the edge given the depth in the side, and the big names in the side. In Prithvi Shaw, Ajinkya Rahane and Shreyas Iyer, they have a top three with international experience. They could have had Rohit Sharma too, but he had to leave the team after playing two games to join the Indian side ahead of the Windies ODIs. The star-studded batting line-up meant there was no place for Siddhesh Lad in the previous game. He'll now return to join the middle order with Suryakumar Yadav, while Rahane will open the batting with Shaw.

There were some concerns over Shaw's fitness; the 18-year-old seemed in discomfort due to a shoulder niggle during the semifinal against Hyderabad, although that didn't stop him from scoring 61 off 44. He did not train with the team on Friday, but Samant revealed he would take the field in the final as the injury was a mere 'muscle pull'. He also has the license to go after the bowling from the first ball. "He has his own way of batting. I don't have to instruct him," said Samant. "Let him play his shots. He's in good form and I'm allowing him to play in his own way. It doesn't matter if he gets out tomorrow on 0 or 1. That's what a champion player is about. If he's on the wicket for 15-20 overs, it's maximum benefit for the team." Mumbai's run in this tournament is what one would call as a result of a complete team performance. None of their batsmen are in the top 10 list of run-scorers. Captain Shreyas Iyer, 15th in the list with 366 runs from five innings, is their leading run-scorer. Shams Mulani, the 21-year-old left-arm spinner, is their highest wicket-taker with 16 wickets from eight games. The ever-reliable Dhawal Kulkarni has led the pace attack with good support from Tushar Deshpande.

The form of the bowlers and Mumbai's top order has meant Mumbai's middle-order hasn't got much time. Samant said that should not be a problem or an excuse for the side, given they are professionals. But that is one area Delhi can see as a weakness; if they can get past the top three on a fresh wicket in the final, they could put the rest under pressure. Delhi have the bowlers to do it too. Navdeep Saini and Khulwant Khejroliya have been in good form, and come into the game with confidence. They picked up six wickets between them to run through Jharkhand in the previous game, setting up their victory. How the two go against Shaw, Rahane and Iyer could well decide the fate of the final. Delhi will also need their batting group to come together and support their captain Gautam Gambhir. He has been their leading run-scorer with 517 runs from nine matches - only second in the tournament list behind Tamil Nadu's Abhinav Mukund - with two hundreds and a fifty. He has been the glue holding the batting together, and his dismissal in the previous game resulted in a collapse from which Delhi nearly never recovered. Fortunately for them, they had Pawan Negi in the lower order to pull it off.

Dhruv Shorey and Nitish Rana have scored in patches, but they'll know that one man can't do all the job. It's an area which Mumbai definitely see as a weakness in the Delhi side. "They have many stroke-players. So there is more responsibility on Gambhir," assessed Samant. "Because there are lot of stroke players he's not playing his (natural) game. And that's what we have to look at. Even if he's at the wicket, it doesn't matter. We shouldn't allow them to score runs quickly." Delhi's coach Mithun Manhas, though, was not too worried and said close games bring the team together.

"Not really. You are going to find yourself in such situations at times. At times there will be smooth sailing. That's part and parcel of cricket. If you win such games, the confidence goes really high. "When you're playing in such a tournament, at some point of time you're going to come across a team that is as good as you are. Jharkhand played really well, they had a good bowling attack, and we managed to pull it off thanks to Saini and Negi. Negi is used to handling that sort of pressure; he's done that before for Delhi and in the IPL as well." Neither team has won the trophy in recent years, which could add to the motivation levels as well. Mumbai last won in 2006-07, while Delhi did in 2012-13. As they often do in press-conferences, both sides stressed they would take the final as 'just another game'. Samant, though, admitted that the nerves would kick in later on Friday evening which could even lead to a sleepless night. It's understandable, for Mumbai and Delhi are two giant cities in Indian cricket whose history goes a long way.
