MUMBAI: An alert local train motorman saved the life of a stray dog which accidentally jumped onto the track at Mulund during peak hour on Friday morning. Motorman G S Bisht spotted the dog moving around on the track ahead and stopped the train at the eleventh hour, just before it entered Mulund station.
An onlooker, Mahesh Herambha, who was filming the incident on his mobile camera, later tweeted the video which went viral. It said: "Mumbai local's motorman slows down local train to save a dog. Today morning @ Mulund PF No 2, 8.11 am CSMT slow train. Motorman saved d life of dog...dog was enjoying the horn & didnt want to leave the tracks. Salute to the motorman."
It was re-tweeted by the Central Railway's Twitter handle and got more than 150 likes and 46 retweets.
Sources said that the dog was initially not leaving the track and after the motorman kept honking repeatedly and moving the train a bit ahead, the dog was forced to run along the length of the platform. It sprinted to the platform end from where it could jump on to a safe area while the train continued its journey.
The train had departed from Kalyan in the morning and was packed with passengers who were travelling during peak hour rush. They were, however, not delayed due to the incident as the train was delayed by just a couple of minutes due to the incident.
Sources said that railway officials have been instructed at all stations on Central Railway to ensure that no stray animal jumps onto the tracks nor crosses it near the platforms.
