Rajkot councillors give themselves massive salary raise

Rajkot: The salary of city corporators has been tripled with retrospective effect from April 1, 2018. A resolution for salary raise was passed at the general board meeting of 72-member Rajkot Municipal Corporation on Saturday.

Corporators belonging to ruling BJP and opposition Congress buried their differences and unanimously passed the resolution. Now, a corporator will get a monthly salary of Rs15,000 instead of Rs5,000.

Congress corporators didn’t allow a calm meeting of the general board. They alleged that the ruling BJP was misguiding people by providing false figures about tree plantation in the city. Congress corporator Jagruti Dangar had come carrying plastic flowers to the meeting to express her anger. Congress members demanded that the audience be allowed to witness the proceedings from the gallery. At least, 73 questions were to be discussed at the meeting, but only one could be taken up.

Congress corporators also made a representation to city police commissioner Manoj Agrawal alleging misbehaviour of police personnel on duty at the RMC’s general board meeting with their party members. They alleged that police personnel had stopped disqualified Congress corporator Dharmishthaba Jadeja from entering the RMC building. Congress member Urvashi Jadeja too was stopped outside the hall of the general board, they alleged.

BJP leader and former mayor Jaiman Upadhyay said, “Congress doesn’t have any agenda and that’s why its members were not allow the general board to function.”
