The Thiruvananthapuram international airport has joined hands with 20 other airports for a herbal sapling planting programme to mark National Ayurveda Day.

On Wednesday, 40,000 medicinal saplings were planted in the shape of the Airports Authority of India (AAI) logo in 21 airports managed by the southern region of the AAI.

The process, which commenced at 10 a.m. in Chennai under the guidance of S. Sreekumar, Regional Executive Director, AAI, was completed in just five minutes in all the airports.

In Thiruvananthapuram airport, the programme was organised by Airport Director George G. Tharakan. The AAI logo was created both at the international and domestic terminals with 700 herbal saplings, mainly Muruvotti (Purple shamrock), Shatavari, Kongini, and Madhura Tulasi.

Later, Mr. Tharakan inaugurated a herbal garden at the domestic side with 177 types of medicinal plants along with a Nakshatra Vanam, comprising 27 star trees.

He said this was a step towards making society aware of the necessity of planting trees, Mr. Tharakan said. The herbal garden is developed with technical support from Shantigiri.
