The Vijayadashami celebrations of the Wadiyars that used to add a royal hue to Dasara was called off on Friday following the death of Putta Chinnammani, mother of Pramodadevi Wadiyar.
She passed away at around 5.45 a.m. on Friday following which the last day proceedings to be held as part of the private Dasara of the Wadiyars were called off.
However, this has no bearing on the Jamboo Savari conducted as part of the State festival.
The last day traditions of the Wadiyars included the conduct of the Khas Durbar, ascending of the golden throne by the titular king Yaduveer Krishnadatta Chamaraja Wadiyar, Vajramusthi Kalaga and the private victory procession.
Meanwhile Chief Ministger Mr. H.D. Kumaraswamy said he was deeply saddened to hear about the death of Putta Chinnammani, condoled her passing away.
This is the first time in living memory that the private Dasara of the Wadiyars has been affected, according to palace sources.
A tradition inherited from the rulers of Vijayanagar empire, it grew in scale after Raja Wadiyar ascended the throne in 1610 AD and decreed that Dasara be celebrated on a grand scale. After the abolition of the monarchy and the privy purse, the State government took over the mantle of keeping alive the tradition and it came to be known as the Naada Habba or State Festival.
However the Wadiyars continued to observe the traditional rites and rituals in private and this has been affected.
A senior official in the Palace said the proceedings have to be completed and will be held after the 3 -ay mourning period at a date to be decided after consultations with the pontiff of the Parakala Mutt.
