2020 Audi E-Tron Sedan To Chase Tesla Model S P100D Performance

Audi‘s upcoming E-Tron GT sedan will be more performance-focused than the E-Tron SUV, the company has confirmed.

Speaking with Autocar, Audi powertrain boss Siegfried Pint revealed that the sedan will look to match the acceleration figures offered by vehicles like the Tesla Model S P100D.

It will be “steered towards performance” Pint said, adding that it will also achieve a similar 248-mile (399 km) range to the E-Tron SUV.

If Audi is to achieve its targets, the E-Tron GT sedan will need to accelerate to 60 mph (96 km/h) in roughly 2.5 seconds. That would make the vehicle Audi’s most accelerative model, a point which could upset Audi R8 owners. To put this into perspective, the E-Tron SUV has a quoted 0-60 mph time of 5.5 seconds.

Pint failed to specify exactly how the performance gains will be achieved for the sedan but it will inevitably mean the fitment of larger and more powerful electric motors. Audi technical development boss Ulrich Widmann has previously said that the GT sedan will also get some genes from Porsche which will almost certainly go some way to achieving Audi’s performance goals.

Underpinning the vehicle will be the same J1 platform as the Porsche Taycan which itself should offer performance similar to the range-topping Tesla Model S. Audi says that the GT sedan will have its batteries mounted lower in the floor than other E-Tron models. Additionally, the vehicle will be Audi’s first that offers support for 350 kW fast charging, allowing it to reach 80 per cent charge in less than 12 minutes.

The Audi E-Tron GT sedan is tipped to be unveiled in concept form at next month’s LA Auto Show.
