Around 770 laboratory technicians would be appointed to various government hospitals in the State soon, Health Minister C.Vijaya Baskar said here on Friday.

In a brief chat with reporters, Mr.Vijaya Baskar pointed out that last year about 870 blood cell counters to detect platelet counts was given to government hospitals in the state at a cost of ₹25 crore. The devices were functioning well and proved their utility. New lab technicians, who are to be issued the appointment letters by Chief Minister Edappadi K.Palaniswami on October 25, would handle and maintain the equipment, the Minister said.

Maintaining that adequate precautionary measures have been taken by government departments to prevent the spread of communicable diseases during the monsoon, Mr.Vijaya Baskar said people need not entertain apprehensions. All the four persons of the family of a doctor in Palayamkottai, who were admitted to hospital with symptoms of H1N1 influenza, have been treated and returned home. “This only goes to show that timely medical intervention will help treat the disease and people should realise this,” the Minister said.

Earlier, the Minister visited the Aavin complex at Kalyanaramapuram where the newly elected office-bearers of the Pudukottai District Cooperative Milk Producers Union assumed office. Mr.Vijaya Baskar said steps would be taken to increase milk procurement in the district to one lakh litres a day from the current 70,000 litres.
