Bonding. James Bonding: Daniel Craig’s papoose is #dadgoals

The hands-on father is very different from the hands-free father or the one whose hands are so addicted to wandering that he has wandered far from his child. He’s not too chicken to be in the delivery room. He changes diapers of course, be they organic or not. Seeks out jobs that give paternity leave. In those tough early months he really steps up for the baby and the mum. He likes being close to his baby, even wearing the baby. Because he can do that with a papoose, a harness that lets him carry the baby on his back or front.

Daniel Craig was spotted sporting a papoose recently. That unsettled the masculinity police. A TV host tweeted mournfully, oh 007, emasculated Bond. But the blowback was immediate. Dads from across the world tweeted pictures of themselves proudly papoosing their babies, up mountain trails, down to the local grocer, just hanging out, getting out of the house to let the mum get some sleep. Avengers Chris Evans and Chris Hemsworth also showed up on the papoose side. Try telling Captain America and Thor they’re not real men.

The number of hands-on daddies is rising with the rise in the proportion of homes where both parents work full time. The idea of what it means to be a man and a father is undergoing revision across societies. Stop trying to shame the sensitivity out of men and fathers embracing this change.
