A Canberra mother who bought a southern fried chicken takeaway meal was horrified to find a deep-fried cockroach embedded in one of the pieces.
Katie Shearer, 37, thought she'd purchased a 10-piece meal from Kingsley's Chicken at Kippax Fair Shopping Centre on Wednesday night, but it turns out it had 11 pieces.
While removing the leftovers from the fridge the following day, Ms Shearer told news.com.au she 'noticed something black sticking out' of one of the pieces.

While removing the chicken leftovers from the fridge the following day, Katie Shearer 'noticed something black sticking out' of one of the pieces - a cockroach
'I thought it was a burnt bit of skin and went to pull it off when I discovered it was not skin but a cockroach,' Ms Shearer said.
The 37-year-old said she 'instantly felt sick' thinking about the food, prepared in the same cooking fat, which she'd fed to her unsuspecting family the night before.
After making the gruesome find, Ms Shearer reported the deep-fried roach to ACT Health Protection Services and she received an email saying they would 'investigate'.
She returned the piece of chicken to Kingsley's Chicken a short time afterwards and asked to speak to the store manager, who was equally as shocked to see the bug.
Ms Shearer claimed the manager told her the bug may have come from cardboard boxes and insisted on taking it 'into the back cooking area to investigate further'.
She alleged the manager also told her that the takeaway store gets regularly sprayed for insects every three to four weeks.

Kingsley's website states: the chain 'sells freshly cooked Grilled breast chicken fillets which are gluten free and may be eaten with our potato chip which of course is gluten free.
When Ms Shearer asked about where the chicken was crumbed, she said she was told 'in store', which she said was 'evidence' the bug had been there before cooking.
'He took my details and gave me a refund, still trying to offer me more food. I refused, informed him I will be notifying the Health Department, said "thank you" and left,' she said.

A spokesperson for ACT Health Protection Services told Daily Mail Australia complaints are taken very seriously and investigated as a 'matter of priority'.
'ACT Health is investigating the complaint received on Thursday regarding this food business,' the spokesperson said.
'If any non-compliance is identified through our inspections and the food business has not been able to rectify these issues, Health Protection Service will take appropriate action in order to ensure the safety and well-being of the community.'
The health authority also urged any concerned customers to contact the organisation if they have any complaints about food safety issues.
Daily Mail Australia has reached out to Kingsley’s Chicken for comment.
