New Delhi: The Congress on Thursday released a list of 12 candidates for the elections to the legislative Assembly of Chhattisgarh.
The first phase of polling covers 18 seats spread across eight Naxal-affected districts: Bastar, Bijapur, Dantewada, Sukma, Kondagaon, Kanker, Narayanpur and Rajnandgaon.
From Bastar the party will field Lakheshwar Baghel, from Jagdalpur it will be Rekhchand Jain and Dantewada will see Devati Karma. In Kanker, it will be Shishu Pal Sori, while Bijapur will see Vikram Shah Mandavi. Kondagaon will be represented by Mohan Lal Markam.
The Congress is seeking to oust the Raman Singh government in the state. The BJP has been in power in the state for three successive terms.
On Wednesday, the Congress released its list of star campaigners for the first phase of Chhattisgarh polls which included Rahul Gandhi, Sonia Gandhi Manmohan Singh, cricketer-turned-politicians Navjot Singh Sidhu and Mohammad Azharuddin.
Earlier, the BSP, in a snub to the Congress, decided to join hands with Ajit Jogi’s party. BSP supremo Mayawati said that if the alliance were to come to power then Ajit Jogi would grace the CM’s chair.
The 90 seats of the Chhattisgarh Assembly will vote in two phases - November 12 and November 20.
