Brisbane developer delivers inner-city West End park
The developer of a controversial West End housing project has delivered on its promise to deliver an inner-city public park the size of Brisbane’s Post Office Square.
The Common at West Village will open to the public on Saturday and is the first significant inner-city park delivered since Milton's Frew Park in 2014.
Sekisui House’s development of the 2.6-hectare former Absoe site attracted resistance from the community since it was lodged with the council in April 2015.
In 2016, the $800 million development was called in by Deputy Premier Jackie Trad, who made a doubling of publicly accessible green space one of the conditions of approval, including one fronting Boundary Street and another fronting Mollison Street.
The public space-fronting Boundary Street was to be delivered within six months of people moving into West Village.
The Common, along with two lanes, will face Boundary Street and provide 3300 square metres of public space.
West Village project direction Andrew Thompson said The Common and projects like it reflected a trend that showed neighbourhood amenity was becoming more important.
“Parkland is not just ‘nice to have’ – it is a core Sekisui House value that open space is integral to our developments for the comfort, health and wellbeing of the community,” he said.
The Common will have a water-play area, a grassed area and several mature trees. It will host fitness classes, outdoor movies and events.
A second park and two further laneways will open in 2020.
The two 14-storey residential buildings in stage 1 will open soon, while stage 2 will start mid-2019 to be completed by mid-2020.
West Village is expected to be finished about 2023.
