PANAJI: In the first ranking of Indian institutes of higher education carried out in the 2019 edition of the QS World University Rankings, Goa University (GU) made it to the top 75 in the country.
In a list where prestigious institutes like Indian Institutes of Technology, Indian Institute of Science (Bengaluru), Delhi University occupied the top spots, GU was ranked in the 56 to 60 bracket.
A total of 86 institutes from India qualified in the parameters set for the ranking, of which GU was one. The number of institutes from India that qualified to be ranked was higher than last year’s 79, meaning GU retained its spot despite increased competition.
GU in a statement said in the QS World University Rankings - BRICS Regional Rankings section as well, the varsity had retained its rank in the top 250 universities among BRICS countries for the fifth year in a row.
Under the rankings, only those universities that produced over 150 papers in the last five years qualify to be ranked, and GU made it to the 403 institutions among BRICS nations that cleared the parameter. “As far as Goa University is concerned, papers per faculty have gone up this time, and the analysis reveals that the staff with PhD indicator is the strongest parameter for Goa University,” GU has said in a statement.
In the BRICS regional rankings, GU stood in the 241 to 250 bracket.
Presently, GU has 12 faculties, of which six operate on the campus with 24 departments and three research centres that offer post-graduate education in Goa.
The university fared well in its ‘Staff with PhDs’ indicator at 84.1. For its ‘Papers per faculty’ and ‘Citations per paper’ indicators, it scored 59.5 and 66.1, which was higher than the score at the 2018 edition of the rankings.
