2nd Test, Sheikh Zayed Stadium, Abu Dhabi 16 - 20 October, 2018

Live Now : Toss won by Pakistan (decided to bat)

Highlights

11:52(IST)

OUT! And the pressure applied in the morning has paid dividends, bringing the first wicket. Harris Sohail goes down the track but fails to get anywhere near the pitch of the delivery. He misses the ball completely and Tim Paine whips the bails off with ease. Early breakthrough for Australia, and much needed.

11:49(IST)

FOUR! Superbly played by Azhar Ali, who rocks back on the back foot and cuts it away for a boundary. It was not a bad delivery from Peter Siddle, fractionally short and fifth stump line but Ali was quick to capitalise on the length for the first boundary of the over. Siddle follows up with a fuller delivery and Ali is up to the task, driving the ball down the ground. No boundary this time though, but it is three runs.

11:46(IST)

Lyon continues to keep his line just outside off stump and produces a play and miss in the over. Initially, Sohail did well not to chase the ball but was finally tempted at playing and it just goes past the outside edge. Two maidens in two for the off-spinner.

11:43(IST)

Cricket Australia provide update on Usman Khawaja, who is not on the field.

"Usman Khawaja has tweaked his knee in the warm-up and is just getting some treatment. Expected to be back out fielding in a couple of overs."

11:42(IST)

Nathan Lyon starts at the other end. He was a touch wide in that over. Harris Sohail has no hesitation defending or leaving the delivery. Petter Siddle is bowling well at the other end, adds another maiden. Good start here from Australia.

11:34(IST)

PLAY! Peter Siddle starts the proceedings for Australia with Azhar Ali facing. Mitchell Starc is standing in the slips instead of the regular boundary cover position. Looks like the pacer is looking to keep his running to a minimum, if possible, only while bowling today. Siddle starts well, concedes two from the first over of the morning.

11:30(IST)

The players are walking out to the field. A massive day awaits both the sides. Pakistan will be looking to continue their dominance in Abu Dhabi on Day 3, ensuring that they end up posting a huge lead for the visitors to chase. Australia will be looking to take some early wickets today to peg back Pakistan's advantage. The current lead of 281 runs in itself is a tough ask to chase.

11:27(IST)

Australia's fast bowling David Saker has confirmed that Mitchell Starc will be bowling today. He's not a hundred per cent fit and has issues with his hamstring but will battle through.

Azhar Ali's dismissal again put the spotlight on the 3m rule in DRS. According to Aaron Finch, Tim Paine did seek clarification yesterday at the end of the day's play.

Finch: It was just a bit of confusion again. Where 3m is down the wicket, if it's still hitting the stumps and hitting in line can we tinker the rule. I know it's sounding sour at the moment because we've been on the receiving end, but it's certainly not. We understand where the rule's at now. but maybe if it's hitting in line and if all three (pitching point, impact with pad, impact with stumps) are still red, maybe there's a chance to overturn it.

Mohammad Abbas after yesterday's performance:

"I have a firm belief in Almighty Allah and I pray that he keeps me away from tough situations. I have played first-class cricket and a lot of things have happened before my eyes. I suffered hardship in my life so my focus is on cricket and that has made me mature. I want to keep my feet on ground, that has been my life and it has matured me. Right or wrong, I know where to go and my focus is to go step to step and whatever happens around me doesn't bother me."

Preview: Mohammad Abbas and Bilal Asif ripped through Australian batting before Fakhar Zaman and Asif Ali hit half-centuries as Pakistan ended Day 2 of the second Test in complete control in Abu Dhabi. Pakistan had reached 144/2 with a commanding lead of 281 at stumps. Ali remained unbeaten on 54 with Harris Sohail (17) batting at the other end. Zaman (66) and Ali had put on a 91-run stand to put Pakistan in charge before Nathan Lyon took a stunning return catch to send back the Pakistan opener for 66. Mitchell Starc had removed Mohammad Hafeez early for 13. Earlier, it was Abbas who continued to wreak havoc with the ball, picking 5/33 as Australia continued to struggle against the right-arm pacer.

Abbas removed Shaun Marsh (3) in the fourth over of the day before dismissing Travis Head (14). Then, it was the spinners led by Asif (3/23) and supported by Yasir Shah (1/59) who got into the action for Pakistan. Shah got the wicket of Mitchell Marsh, caught close to the wicket for 13. Asif removed Aaron Finch (39) - the only batsman who looked like putting up a fight and then also got the better of the Australian captain Tim Paine (3) in the last over before lunch.

Australia were then left struggling at 91-7 after the 1st session. After that, it was all about providing some respectability to the total and Marnus Labuschagne along with Mitchell Starc did exactly that, stitching together a 37-run stand before a freakish run-out ended Labuschagne's stay at the crease. He backed up too far and a straight drive from Starc was deflected to the stumps by Shah which caught the Australian out of his crease. Abbas then ended Starc's fight, removing him for 34 as Australia were dismissed for a paltry 145, giving Pakistan a healthy lead of 137. Zaman's fine form continued and Ali's half-century meant Australia will need nothing less than a miracle to save this game with three full days still left.
