Footy star Shannon Grant has escaped with just a fine of barely more than $1,000 after he assaulted his ex-girlfriend for the fourth time.

The former North Melbourne premiership player had pleaded guilty to breaching a domestic violence order when he attacked the woman twice in Duporth Tavern at Maroochydore, on Queensland's Sunshine Coast.

Queensland Police prosecutor Senior Constable Stuart Lydford told the Herald Sun that on January 13 Grant had an argument with his ex-girlfriend before he walked out of the tavern.
