Nudists get reprieve as popular beach near Byron Bay has its optional-clothing rule renewed despite complaints about 'lewd behaviour'

  • A popular nudist beach has only just held onto its 'clothing optional' rule today
  • Byron Bay council staff attempted to revoke rule after 'lewd behaviour' reports
  • A busier beach was set to replace as there would be more 'passive witnesses'

Nudists are rejoicing after a popular beach had its 'optional-clothing' rule extended today despite strong opposition by some councillors and residents.

Byron Bay's council staff had recommended Tyagarah Beach's nude bathing option be revoked amid reports of 'lewd sexual behaviour'.

However the motion to enforce clothing was opposed and the beach will continue to welcome naked swimmers and sunbathers.

Council agreed to maintain the status quo but ordered a review of the position on a monthly basis for the next six months.

The council also discussed further key actions which could prevent future incidents which included the introduction of security cameras.

Councillor Michael Lyon, of the Greens, had been among those backing a change.

‘The idea that children can’t walk from Tyagarah to Main Beach and feel safe is obviously pretty concerning,’ Cr Lyon told The Echo

One councillor noted that it will only be a matter of time before the council would be held accountable for a sexual offence on the beach because it had allowed people to be naked in the public area.

However Cr Lyon and other Greens councillors only supported a change on the proviso that an alternative beach be made available for nude swimming.

They argued that a busier beach could be the answer as having more people around will 'discourage lewd and criminal behaviour'.

Nearby Belongil Beach was being considered as an alternative.

The councillors believed that 'passive surveillance' by more beachgoers would prevent the kind of lewd behaviour which had seen multiple incidents reported around Tyagarah Beach over the past two years.

In a report conducted by the Safe Beaches Stakeholder Group, it was found that crime rates were much higher at Tyagarah as opposed to township beaches, due to its remoteness and social media sites which promoted sexual behaviour in the area.

The Byron Naturist group slammed council for ignoring the positive aspects of the beach and members said they had not witnessed any of the lewd sexual acts described by the Safe Beaches Stakeholder Group.

Byron Bay which was once known for its relaxed, hippy environment has dramatically changed over the years, becoming more known for its increasingly expensive real estate and shops and celebrity residents.
