2019 Toyota 4Runner Gets Special Nightshade Edition, TRD Pro Gains New Suspension

Toyota has announced a series of updates to the 4Runner family for the 2019 model year.

Perhaps the standout of the updated range is the introduction of the 2019 Toyota 4Runner Nightshade Special Edition. This variant was found announced at September’s Texas State Fair and is based on the Limited model.

The new 4Runner Nightshade Special includes some styling modifications including a black chrome grille, black chrome exhaust, and black 20-inch wheels. Black trim is also found on the wing mirrors, door handles, window surrounds, steering wheel, center console, and door panels.

The capable Toyota 4Runner TRD Pro model has also been updated for 2019. Alterations include an all-new suspension package consisting of 2.5-inch Fox Internal Bypass Shocks which promise to improve off-road performance but not hurt on-road handling and comfort. These shocks are paired with TRD-tuned coil springs that give an extra inch of front lift. At the rear, 2.5-inch Fox shocks are also used, compete with remote reservoirs to cope with any demanding off-road scenario.

The 2019 4Runner TRD Pro also comes with a custom roof rack, JBL Premium Audio system as standard, a moonroof, and an updated front skid plate with red TRD lettering.

Just like the 2018 model, the 2019 range is offered exclusively with a 4.0-liter V6 engine delivering 270 hp and 278 lb-ft (376 Nm) of torque. This engine is paired with a 5-speed ECT-i automatic transmission with sequential shift mode. While neither the vehicle’s horsepower or torque figures are huge, they are enough to tow a maximum of 5000 lbs (2267 kg).

Customers can opt between two-wheel drive and four-wheel drive. The first of those systems features an Automatic Limited Slip Differential as standard which works alongside the traction control system to allow for some wheel slippage to help the vehicle dig its way out of sand or snow. As for the available part-time 4WD system, it includes an Active Traction Control system alongside a two-speed transfer case with selectable low-range.

The 2019 Toyota 4Runner Limited uses a full-time 4WD as standard and includes an advanced Torsen center differential that can alter torque between the wheels in response to slippage.
