As many as 20 buffaloes were rescued here on Tuesday from a mini truck at the Greater Noida zero point on the Yamuna Expressway, the police said, adding that one animal was found dead.
The police said they were informed about the truck by a self-proclaimed activist around 8 a.m.
The police said that some of the animals had tags on them, which led the authorities to suspect that the buffaloes were heading to a slaughter house.
Greater Noida-based activist Amit said he followed the truck, which was coming from Noida and was headed towards Greater Noida. “I started following it [the truck] after I noticed several buffaloes stuffed inside the vehicle. I was finally able to stop the truck at the zero point near Pari Chowk,” he said.
The truck driver had run away by the time the police reached the spot.
Driving licence found
Upon searching the vehicle, the police found a driving licence bearing the name of one Mohammad Adil.
The police also found a piece of paper, which appeared to be a receipt and had text written in Urdu.
Station House Officer of Kasna police Station Sunil Kumar Singh said, “A case has been registered against an unidentified person and an investigation into the matter has been initiated. Efforts are on to nab the driver of the truck.”
“The buffaloes have been handed over to the local activists in Kasna, who played a major role in their rescue,” Mr. Singh added.
