She held meeting to honour Bhagat Singh

The suspension of a student by the Government Arts College, Coimbatore, for “obstructing peace on the campus and holding a meeting without the principal’s permission,” has snowballed into a controversy, with the suspended student alleging that her democratic rights had been curtailed.

On September 28, S. Malathi, approached principal K. Chitra for permission to conduct a function in honour of freedom fighter Bhagat Singh. She was told to take the department head’s permission, who expressed helplessness in the matter.

Ms. Malathi, however, went on to conduct a meeting, in which students complained about the college.
