MUMBAI: A Virar woman has been sentenced to six years’ imprisonment for abetting the suicide of her husband.

In 2016, Maya Gupta’s husband Santoshkumar had committed suicide by hanging himself at his Virar home. The Vasai sessions court recently found Maya guilty of the crime.

Santoshkumar’s mother had filed a case of abetment, alleging Maya, who was estranged from her husband, used to send him photographs of herself with her lover.

The couple had an arranged marriage, but Maya continued her relationship with her lover. When Santoshkumar learnt about it, he questioned her. She admitted to being in a relationship, but refused to end it. Instead, she left for her parental home.

She then began torturing Santoshkumar by sending him pictures with her lover. She began demanding money and threatened to make his life miserable if he did not pay her. Fed up with the harassment, Santoshkumar hanged himself.

His mother told the court her son had plunged into depression. Santoshkumar had even tried to reconcile with Maya but ended up being beaten up by his in-laws.
